Where Comfort Ends, Faith Begins

What does it really mean to follow Jesus versus simply knowing about him?

In Acts 19, we encounter a striking moment where seven men attempt to use the name of Jesus as a kind of formula, invoking his authority without any genuine relationship or submission to him.

The result is humbling and even a little alarming. This passage cuts right to the heart of a question we all need to sit with: are we following Jesus, or are we asking Jesus to follow us?

There is a world of difference between inviting Jesus to bless the life we have already planned and actually surrendering that life to his leading. The early believers in Ephesus understood this in a deeply practical way. When the gospel took root in their hearts, they did not just adjust their beliefs quietly on the inside. They brought their books of magic into the open and burned them publicly, at an enormous personal cost.

Their repentance was visible, costly, and real. That challenges us to ask what we might still be holding onto, and what excuses we have been making to avoid surrendering it. Faith that costs us nothing may not be the kind of faith that changes us.
